Depression overdiagnosed by questionnaire developed by drug company

Depression overdiagnosed by questionnaire developed by drug company

in

About the author: Bryan Hubbard

People are being diagnosed with depression with a simplistic point-scoring questionnaire that was developed by the drug company that has some of the leading antidepressant brands, and so is most likely to benefit from a diagnosis and prescription.

There's a danger that depression is being overdiagnosed by busy family doctors, who are not trained in psychiatric problems and instead rely on the PHQ-9 questionnaire, which was developed by Pfizer, the drug company that makes the top-selling antidepressants Zoloft (sertraline) and Effexor (venlafaxine).

Although an antidepressant prescription can be determined by responses to the PHQ-9, a major study has found that it is inadequate, and shouldn't be relied on for a clinical diagnosis. Researchers from the University of Leicester looked at 40 previously-published studies, involving 14,760 adults, 14 per cent of whom had major depression. The test can't accurately identify cases of depression, but can only rule out patients who aren't depressed, the researchers concluded.
The PHQ-9—or Patient Health Questionnaire—asks nine questions that have four possible answers, from 'not at all' to 'nearly every day'. The patient is asked whether he or she has little interest or pleasure in doing things, feels down or depressed, has trouble sleeping, feels tired, has poor appetite, feels bad about themselves, has trouble concentrating, moves or speaks slowly, and has thoughts of self-harm or wanting to be dead.
The answers notch up scores that range from 0 to 27, and an antidepressant prescription can be triggered by the doctor's judgement and any score that is above 10.

Antidepressants: they don't work (but don't tell anyone)

You'd think it is enough of a scandal that doctors are prescribing powerful antidepressants to two-year-olds, but now we're told that one pharmaceutical suppressed findings that the drugs weren't even working.
It's been announced this week that GlaxoSmithKline, the UK's largest drug company, avoided publishing the data because it was concerned the findings would affect its lucrative adult market for the drug.
Two major clinical trials, codenamed protocols 329 and 377, tested Seroxat (paroxetine) on a group of children and adolescents with major depression and found that the drug was no more effective than a placebo, or sugar pill.
Despite these findings, GlaxoSmithKline was also aware that the drug caused suicidal tendencies, especially among the young.
The full findings of the studies, which were carried out in 1998, came to light only last spring when the UK regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, banned the drug for use among children because it was ineffective and unsafe.
The revelation is but the latest twist to a scandal that is worrying regulators in the UK and the USA. America's drug watchdog, the Food and Drug Administration, has finally agreed to review the practice of prescribing antidepressants to children. The drugs are not in any event licensed for use among children, but doctors are free to prescribe them if they feel it is an appropriate therapy.
As we outlined in E-news 58, around 2 per cent of all youths in the USA are prescribed an antidepressant. This unlicensed usage increased by 400 per cent between 1988 and 1994 alone.
The FDA has conceded that the drugs are more likely than placebo to cause suicidal thoughts, although nobody knows how many children have attempted or committed suicide while taking an antidepressant.
We recall an encounter we once had with Dr Thomas Stuttaford, the medical correspondent for the London Times. 'The trouble with you (What Doctors Don't Tell You and all like us),' he said, 'is that you don't realize that when you have a sharp sword (an effective drug), some heads will be cut off (there will be adverse reactions).' It appears that blunt swords can also decapitate, too.

Antidepressants: deaths from these drugs are enough to make you depre

About the author: WDDTY Team

We're always told that drug prescribing is all about a careful balance between risk and benefit
We're always told that drug prescribing is all about a careful balance between risk and benefit. People suffering from severedepression do need help, and occasionally a prescribed antidepressant can be helpful.
But new research reveals that doctors need to think twice before prescribing antidepressants, and patients should think three times before taking them.
Antidepressants are a far more deadly family of drugs than even their critics realized, research from Canberra Hospital in Australia shows.
The tricyclic antidepressants, for example, have killed 2,598 people in England, Scotland and Wales between 1993 and 1999. The most lethal drug has been desipramine; although it was responsible for just nine deaths, only 45,000 prescriptions were ever written, which works out at a rate of 200 fatalities for every million prescriptions.
The statistics make for sobering, and, in some cases, shocking reading. The family doctor writes the vast majority ofprescriptions for antidepressants, and these findings may stay even his hand.
Research in the past has discovered that antidepressants are also poor substitutes for greater human contact, counselling and self-help therapies.
Perhaps in the light of these new findings, these more humane, and less dangerous, approaches to the epidemic of depression will now be given their rightful place.

New fear of explosions in Fukushima — Nuclear waste threatens to “spontaneously combust” — Millions of tons of radioactive material could be released

New fear of explosions in Fukushima — Nuclear waste threatens to “spontaneously combust” — Millions of tons of radioactive material could be released — Nuclear Expert: Japanese government is “terrified” (AUDIO)

Published: May 9th, 2017 at 12:17 pm ET  By ENENews

Question (at 1:03:45 in): Hi, I’m Norma Field calling from Chicago… I’ve seen that those huge plastic garbage bags that hold the waste from so-called decontamination in some places now have little chimneys attached to them. I’m imagining that since this is often organic waste that’s been baking under the sun, there are gases that have to be releases. Now, how effective are those bags at containing radionuclides if they have to be off-gassed in that way? Thank you.

Arnie Gundersen, nuclear engineer:
You’re very observant. I noticed that when I was over there, too. I’ll let our other listeners know – when you think of these large fields of bags, they have organic matter in them.
They have leaves and grass clippings and tree limbs and on and on, that as they decay, they give off methane gas, which of course is flammable. And the Japanese are terrified that they’ll get a fire – essentially spontaneous combustion in the center of these large piles, that could re-volitalize a million bags of radioactive waste again. So they have pipes sticking out of the piles at predetermined locations in an attempt to allow the radioactive and non-radioactive gasses – the explosive gasses, to leak out. I just keep thinking that sooner or later a lightning strike is going to cause one of these dumps of perhaps a million bags of radioactive contaminants to go up in fire again… What the Japanese are doing – and I witnessed this, we have some pictures up on the site about this – is they’re taking the bags with the least contamination – and they’re still contaminated – and burning them in incinerators that they’re building. No one is getting good data on what’s coming out those stacks, but I believe that the cesium is being released right up the stack again… I probably went on way too long a rant for that question, but my hat’s off to you for understanding that these piles of bags not only are radioactive but they’re potentially flammable.

Everyone on Earth has been irradiated by Fukushima — “Shocking new study reveals true extent of global impact” — “Scientists are only just now confirming far-reaching effects” of nuclear disaster

Published: May 8th, 2017 at 6:54 am ET

By ENENews
New Scientist, May 5, 2017 (emphasis added): Fukushima accident gave everyone an X-ray’s worth of radiation — “We don’t need to worry,” says Nikolaos Evangeliou at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, whose team has conducted the first global survey of radiation exposure caused by the meltdown of three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant… Evangeliou’s team has calculated the approximate exposure of everyone on Earth to two radioactive isotopes of caesium… He has estimated the dose that most individuals received to be 0.1 millisievert. “What I found was that we got one extra X-ray each,” says Evangeliou… But Evangeliou says that the effects on wildlife around the plant might be more severe. Already, he says, increased levels of radiation around Fukushima have been linked to declines in bird populations there between 2011 and 2014. “There have also been reports of declines in other species such as insects and some mammals,” he says…
Daily Star, May 7, 2017: Global cancer fears as it’s revealed WHOLE WORLD got nuclear radiation blast; EVERYBODY on Earth was dealt a dose of radiation by the Fukushima triple nuclear meltdown, a shock new study has revealed… And the plant continues to release radiation to this day, despite efforts to contain the leaking. Now a study from the Norwegian Institute for Air Research has revealed the true extent of the global impact. Lead author Nikolaos Evangeliou told New Scientist magazine: “What I found was that we got one extra X-ray each.” According to the NHS website, people exposed to X-rays face the risk of developing cancer “many years or decades later.”… Most people got 0.1 millisievert of extra radiation from the Fukushima disaster
BGR, May 7, 2017: Japan’s nuclear disaster gave everyone on Earth extra radiation — It’s been over half a decade… but scientists are only just now confirming its far-reaching effects… each human on the planet received roughly 0.1 millisievert…
Evangeliou et al. (pdf), European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2017: Global transport of Fukushima-derived radionuclides from Japan to Asia, North America and Europe. Estimated doses and expected health effects… A large number of fission products were released and transported worldwide. We estimate that around 23% of the released 137Cs remained into Japan, while 76% deposited in the oceans. Around 163 TBq deposited over North America, among which 95 TBq over USA, 40 TBq over Canada… About 14 TBq deposited over Europe… and 47 TBq over Asia… 69 TBq deposited in the Arctic, as well. An attempt to assess exposure of the population and the environment showed that the effective dose from gamma irradiation during the first 3 months… in the rest of the world it was less than 0.1 mSv. Such doses are equivalent with the obtained dose from a simple X-ray… However, monitoring data have shown that much higher dose rates were committed to organisms raising ecological risk for small mammals and reptiles in terms of cytogenetic damage and reproduction.

Radioaktivt avfall - Sediment i öppet hav - Så här vilseleder Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten

Radioaktivt avfall - Sediment i öppet hav

Fukushima Nuclear Waste On USA Beaches & In Seafood! (Update 2017)

Fukushima Nuclear Waste On USA Beaches & In Seafood!
(Update 2017)

Julkaistu 14.2.2017
The entire Pacific Coast of the United States, like California, Oregon, Washington (state), Canada, and Mexico, has been officially reported to be contaminated with radioactive particles from the Japanese Fukushima nuclear power plant, which is killing Ocean life in droves. And finally, it's being officially acknowledged that this is really happening. This is a stark reminder that the effects from Fukushima's radiation continually gushing into the ocean, for 6-years now, at 300 to 400 tons of toxic, radioactive water per day, has not been abated. The nuclear site continues to gush highly toxic radioactive material to this day... Nothing has stopped. This terrible, avoidable problem, has only become much, much worse!

Its wall to wall crazies in a panic out there!
Original video suggesting that Fukushima is responsible for the high levels of radioactive 'contamination' on the beaches in the Bay Area of California.

Personally I dont believe a word of it. Firstly because there's quite a lot of naturally occurring uranium, thorium and radium in california, secondly because beaches are one of the places where geological reworking can happen (eg filtering by density), thirdly because black magnetic sand on those beaches killed one of my remote controlled FPV planes, and magnetic black sand is well known for containing elements like thorium, and lastly, some folks with a energy sensitive radiation meter have claimed to visit this beach and showed that the actual radiation in this instant was coming from thorium.

Seeing as there is essentially no fission decay products in nature, you can detect incredibly small quantities of them. No fission decay products were found.

Buy your Canned Tuna, Now?

Long term radiation effects, in Tuna?
With many of the long term effects from the Japanese Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster still ahead of us, a serious consideration should be made regarding the food chain and the possible radioactive contamination thereof. In this example, let's look at Tuna fish. Is it safer to buy canned tuna now, before possible contamination into its food chain?
They spawn in the Western Pacific between Okinawa and the Philippines and the Sea of Japan and they migrate over 6,000 nautical miles to the Eastern Pacific, eventually returning back to their birth waters to spawn again.
What do Tuna eat?
Tuna mostly eat small fish ranging from 1.5 inches up to 6 inches. Tuna will also eat squid, and very occasionally will consume crustaceans.
The small fish that tuna will eat include skipjack herring, flying fish, lancetfish, puffer fish, triggerfish and rabbitfish.

60% fish
20% squid
15% crustaceans

If tuna eat smaller fish like Herring, then what do the Herring eat?
Herring (a.k.a. trash fish) eat mostly plankton, as well as algae and some kelp.

If tuna eat squid, then what do squid eat?
Squids are carnivorous. The smaller species of squid mostly eat shrimp, and other small fish.
How could radiation enter the fish food-chain?
So now that we have an idea of what type of tuna is caught off Japan, and what it is that the tuna eat, lets hypothesize how radioactive particles could be ingested into this food chain.

We know that they have been dumping tremendous amounts of radioactive water into the Pacific ocean. This is the water that they have been spraying onto the reactors, fuel rods, and fuel pools while trying to keep them from entirely melting down. The problem is, there has been partial meltdown and the radiation is traveling with the water runoff, which is currently being dumped into the ocean (some water is being diverted into storage tanks).
Of much higher concern is Cesium-137, which has a half-life of 30 years (considered gone after 300 years). Of even higher concern is Plutonium-239 which has an unimaginable half-life of 24,000 years (considered gone after 240,000 years).
The radiation in the seawater is surely getting diluted, however fish are swimming in the water, and the diluted particles of Cesium and Plutonium will remain somewhere in the oceans for 300 to 240,000 years. Do you know how fish stay alive? They constantly are passing water through their mouths into their gills -- never ending.
Not only do little fish stay alive this way, but also big fish. So, not only will big fish get their own radiation through water injection through their gills, etc... but the big fish also eat the small fish. Effectively then, they are getting More radiation.
The big fish are then caught for processing, distribution and consumption by humans.
Where does the 'canned' tuna come from?
About 68 percent are caught from the Pacific Ocean, 22 percent from the Indian Ocean, and the remaining 10 percent from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea

When you open a can of tuna, you don't know where the actual tuna was caught.

Odds are of course, that the tuna in that particular can may not have been caught off the shore of Japan -- it could have been caught in any other number of places in the Pacific. Lots of these tuna migrate their way to the west coast U.S., but it takes awhile -- years in some cases.

No doubt the food supply chain will be examined further as time goes on, particularly if the situation continues to worsen at the Fukushima nuclear plant (It's already a level-7, the highest on the nuke disaster scale). True results may not be measured for many years to come while looking back at cancer rates.

No amount of radiation ingestion is 'OK' though. A single Cesium-137 particle stuck in your body could start the chain reaction that leads to cancer.

Some even thought glowing Sushi would be cool as they could eat in the dark. I want to stress this is old news and the radiation levels now found in fish are likely much higher!
