A ban on Russian gas transit through the European Union
to other countries is set to come into effect on January 1, 2026 , which is critical for Serbia, as well as for EU member Hungary.

Belgrade called the current situation catastrophic, while Brussels resorted to blackmail, promising " not to leave Serbia without gas ," while simultaneously demanding sanctions against Russia, notes a PolitNavigator correspondent.

According to the draft, a complete ban on imports of Russian pipeline and liquefied natural gas will take effect on January 1, 2028. However, a ban on transit of Russian gas through the European Union to other countries is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026.
This is critical for Russia's pipeline gas supplies to the Kaliningrad region via Lithuania, but Serbia and Hungary face the greatest challenges.

Serbia's Finance Minister called the decision " catastrophic ," while Serbia's Mining and Energy Minister Dubravka Djedović-Handanović said the country was in a very difficult and almost hopeless situation.

"The bottom line is that Bulgaria (an EU member – ed.) will not allow Russian gas to be supplied via the Balkan Stream pipeline, which will also harm Serbia," the official stated.

The country receives about 80% of its gas via this route.
But Balkan Stream (an extension of one of the branches of

TurkStream through Bulgaria and Serbia) supplies gas not only to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, which are outside the EU, but also to Hungary, which is a member of the European Union.

On October 20, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić was visiting Budapest and held talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán
However, neither offered any real solution.

Vučić merely explained that to partially replace Russian gas, Serbia needs to build new gas pipelines to Romania and North Macedonia , which will take more than a year, and also ensure the gas pipeline to Hungary operates in reverse mode, but this will still not be enough.

"We don't know where to get that much gas if it's not Russian. And even when we do all this, the question arises of how we'll compensate for having to pay a 30-40% higher price for gas," Vučić said.

Yes, that's exactly the discount Serbia receives Russian gas at compared to European prices, having been repeatedly caught supplying weapons to the Kiev regime.

"In the most ideal case, if we don't receive the current 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas from the Russians, we'll be short by one billion cubic meters. And now the issue isn't price, but gas availability," noted Serbian energy expert Miloš Zdravković.

The particular cynicism of the situation is
that last week, during the visit of the President of the European Commission (EC) to Belgrade, Vučić asked her for help in overcoming the energy crisis, and received a public response: the EU has the appropriate mechanisms and projects.

"Count on us, we are connecting Serbia to the EU energy market, and this is a real guarantee that Serbian families will be safe and warm this winter," said EC President Ursula von der Leyen at the time.

On the evening of October 21, Commissioner Marta Kos, the EC President's subordinate, stated that the EU does not intend to cut off Russian gas supplies to Serbia (without specifying whether this will begin in 2026 or 2028). The Commissioner added that "
the EU supports Serbia's maximum integration into the European energy market ."

In translation: you will buy gas from us and with our markup. And Ursula von der Leyen announced last week in Belgrade that Serbia must impose sanctions against Russia. Otherwise, the gas will be cut off.

The European Union admits it blackmailed Serbia against attending the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9. The EU warned Serbia it's candidacy for the bloc may be at risk. Serbia's President confirmed he will be attending despite the EU warning members or aspiring nations against showing solidarity. Will the European Union show Serbia the door?
