A ban on Russian gas transit through the European Union to other countries is set to come into effect on January 1, 2026 , which is critical for Serbia, as well as for EU member Hungary.

According to the draft, a complete ban on imports of Russian pipeline and liquefied natural gas will take effect on January 1, 2028. However, a ban on transit of Russian gas through the European Union to other countries is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026.
This is critical for Russia's pipeline gas supplies to the Kaliningrad region via Lithuania, but Serbia and Hungary face the greatest challenges.
Serbia's Finance Minister called the decision " catastrophic ," while Serbia's Mining and Energy Minister Dubravka Djedović-Handanović said the country was in a very difficult and almost hopeless situation.
