Is The Soursop (Graviola) Tree Keeping Yvonne Kirlew Alive

CANCER IS a scourge for which there seems to be no wholesale antidote. It attacks and kills just about anyone. No respecter of race, politics, religion and social status it is. It has decimated familial ties and relationships, and even attempted to destroy the love affair between Ray and Yvonne Kirlew of Discovery Bay, St Ann.
Diagnosed with lymphatic cancer (Hodgkin's lymphoma) in late 2002, Yvonne went through an agonising period of chemotherapy which twisted and wracked her being with pain and nausea, in its efforts to kill the cancer cells. It was killing her instead, and so she planned her own funeral. But Ray was determined that the woman he loves was not going to leave him, and he nursed her back to good health. By December 2004, it seemed that Yvonne was cancer-free.
The Gleaner told their story in a two-part instalment in July 2007, and we also updated readers in January last year with the news that the cancer had returned between December 2008 and March 2009. Yvonne got ill again, and the dreaded chemotheraphy was suggested. Around the same time, Ray got an email about the cancer-curing properties of the soursop tree. He did some further research, and was mesmerised by what he read. Not having any empirical evidence, he set out to make the leaves and bark of the soursop tree into a concoction that would kill Yvonne's cancer cells.
After much encouragement from Ray, Yvonne drank the potion. She got sicker initially, and refused to drink any more, but Ray urged her on. After a month of being on the dose, Yvonne's health improve tremendously. Tests in September 2009 to determine when chemo-therapy would commence showed that the movement of the cancer cells had stopped. Amazingly! More tests were done, and up to Monday, January 18, 2010, when The Gleaner reported that 'Raymond Kirlew 'cures' wife cancer with soursop leaves', Yvonne, who gets tested regularly, but had no cancer.
There were many sceptics, some of whom said it was a matter of time before the cancer cells return. Some readers even questioned Ray's wisdom, or lack thereof, for administering the soursop concoctions to his wife, despite the fact that he is not a medical doctor. But now, Ray is saying since the story broke, many people, including medical doctors themselves, have contacted him seeking advice on how to prepare the potion.
"Everyone who has called me regarding this soursop treatment, I have never ever asked for a penny, nor have I got a penny, and was not expecting any. I know for a fact that this thing has saved my wife, and whosoever wants to know how to make it, I would be happy to give them that information," Ray said.
Living cancer-free
He has even told the story of a woman, known personally to him, who had lung cancer and was sent home to die because the cancer had spread to other organs. She is now living her life cancer-free after drinking the soursop potion. Another gentleman who was suspected of having a tumour in his brain is now doing well too. Some of those who refused to drink the concoction, Ray said, are now dead.
Ray and Yvonne have no regrets. They are convinced that Yvonne is alive because of the soursop tree, which bears that 'jucky-jucky' fruit that gives us that after-Sunday dinner belch. But what does Yvonne have to say to people who are still of the view that she is using a concoction not prescribed by doctors or approved by the authorities?
"I would say to them that the same way chemotherapy is used in treating cancer patients, it was more than likely discovered by people who were trying to find a cure. By testing these treatments over a long period of time, people were healed, even temporarily ... . I am one of the lucky ones, I think, because I tried something that may not have been proven, may not be in the medical books, but I tried it and it works for me."
And it seems to have work wonders for Yvonne in other ways. "I also had a problem with my blood pressure. I have a tendency to have high blood pressure, and whenever I take the soursop drink, my pressure is down ... . I am convinced that the soursop helps to kill the cancer cells, lower my blood pressure, and to repair the damaged nerves," she said. The chemotherapy that she went through in 2003 had damaged some of her nerves, and thus she was having problems with her coordination.
It is almost 10 years since Yvonne, whose mother, father and brother had died of cancer, was diagnosed, and almost two years since she had started drinking the soursop concoction. Very recently, she went to New York to do some more tests. A week before she left, she was feeling pain in some major lymph nodes. So, she was a bit nervous upon leaving the island. Well, she is back, with a clean bill of health, and the pain is gone.
She still has the dress she had planned to spend eternity in. It's in her closet, still clean, still stylish, but she has no plan to wear it anytime soon. And even so, it might just be too small, she said.

ON THE verge of death Yvonne Kirlew was, nearly a decade ago. The chemotherapy to destroy her lymphatic cancer was apparently killing her too.
But her husband, Raymond, was determined that she wasn't going to leave him. He nursed her through a dreadful time of pain and near-death moments, and the cancer went into remission.
But her husband, Raymond, was determined that she wasn't going to leave him. He nursed her through a dreadful time of pain and near-death moments, and the cancer went into remission.
But, alas, it came back. And Raymond's war on the cancer started all over again, and this time around he went to nature for help. He acted upon the information that the leaves, stem and bark of the soursop tree, found all over Jamaica, were more powerful and less debilitating than chemotherapy. Daily, he has been feeding Yvonne the drink extracted from the leaves and the bark of the soursop tree, and Yvonne has been cancer-free sinceJanuary 2010.
Well documented
Yvonne and Raymond Kirlew's story is well documented by this newspaper. The reaction to the articles was overwhelming. Readers from all over the world called or emailed seeking further information and to get in touch with the Kirlews. The last article was published in The Gleaner on Saturday, August 20, last year, but the fascination with their story cannot seem to die.
But the information on the healing properties of the soursop tree has long been in the public domain. It was sent to south Florida radio host, the Reverend Dr Dennis G. Grant, about five years ago, and he posted it on his home office wall. Dr Grant is the host of a very popular two-hour Saturday show called 'The Love Hour' on WAVS 1170.
In April, the native of St Mary, Jamaica, who has about 35 fruit trees in his yard in Florida, also began to boil the leaves from his own tree. "I started to take it (the drink) myself, figured it was working. My high blood pressure, my cholesterol are now normal without medication," he told The Gleaner.
Then someone sent him the August 20 article.
"And when I looked at the article I saw your name - and that's when I picked up the phone and called you," he told this writer, whom he had met earlier this year at an event called 'Kingston Pon Di River', "and I started to do my own research, my own investigation, and I told my radio listeners about it."
Totally healed
Subsequently, Dr Grant began bottling the drink extracted from his own leaves.
"On a Saturday, after my radio programme or during my radio programme, we don't have hands to get rid of it," he said, "and now we are getting testimonies: My insurance agent, diagnosed with gall bladder problems and prostate cancer, he's now totally, totally healed by drinking the soursop.
So it has been working miracles. We have numerous, numerous testimonies."
Yet, there are sceptics. "A lot of people have read your article. I have emailed it to thousands of people. A lot of them don't believe that this is really factual. As a radio host, I wanted to come and meet the Kirlews myself," Dr Grant said.
- So, to remove some of the doubts, Dr Grant flew in from Florida last weekend to visit the Kirlews at their home at Dairy, Discovery Bay, St Ann.

But unbeknown to Dr Grant, the big soursop tree that seems to be sustaining Yvonne and keeping the Kirlews happy was blown over by Hurricane Sandy. Some of the roots are still firmly embedded in the ground, and the leaves are still fresh and green. It will be propped up soon by Raymond. Just as it was with Yvonne, death is not an option.
After a warm reception by the Kirlews, they gave Dr Grant a synopsis of their story, and some of the soursop portion from the fridge, which they drank on the spot. Then, it was time for Raymond, always the enthusiastic storyteller, to give anecdotes of people whose cancer was cured by the soursop tree, and those who chose chemotherapy over the soursop, and had since made the transition.
At 10 o' clock, via telephone, Raymond and Yvonne were interviewed live on Dr Grant's radio show.
With the fallen soursop tree as the backdrop, Yvonne, Raymond and Dr Grant spoke for about 10 minutes.
At one stage, a smiling Yvonne Kirlew exclaimed, "I feel great!" to which Dr Grant replied, "And you're looking wonderful! If they could just see how wonderful and healthy you look."
After the live interview, Dr Grant told The Gleaner,
"I can go back and now say, I have met them, I have seen them.
They have told me how it's done, what it has done.
They have the medical records right there in the home.
I am a believer.
I now believe even more that this soursop cured Mrs Kirlew, and it is a miracle drug.
If my visit saved one life - this visit from Florida to Discovery Bay, Jamaica - just one life, it would have been worth it."

In July 16 and 23, 2007, we told the story of how Raymond Kirlew, of St Ann, helped to nurse his wife, Yvonne, back to health when she had cancer of the lymph nodes.
It was a poignant love story that softened the heart of the toughest man, but it took a bittersweet turn last year when they were told the cancer had come back.
"She has been going for tests routinely every three to four months to make sure the cancer (lymphoma) remains in check. Up to March 2009, Yvonne's test results were basically the same. In fact, we went on a Caribbean cruise with two friends in April 2009," Raymond Kirlew said.
But between December 2008 and March last year, Yvonne was feeling pain and having frequent nerve spasms in her limbs. From March 22 to 26, she underwent a series of tests. Continued medication and shock treatment for the nerves that were damaged by chemotherapy were suggested. They decided against the shock treatment.
However, the pain and the spasms in the legs continued, accompanied by night sweats.
More tests and examinations, including a brain/body CT scan, were done between June 23 and 28 in New York.- Cancer movements were detected and a detailed positron emission tomography (PET) scan was recommended to be done as soon as possible.
By now, Yvonne was feeling pain in her limbs, abdomen, groin and lymph nodes.
