Up to 3,000 Palestinians have been forcibly disappeared in Gaza, while thousands more remain beneath rubble, according to a new study.

Thousands Forcibly Disappeared
Between 2,500 and 3,000 Palestinians are estimated to have been subjected to enforced disappearance in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of Israel’s genocidal war, according to a new study by the Palestinian Center for Missing and Forcibly Disappeared Persons.
Released in conjunction with the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the study examined 317 documented cases to identify recurring patterns in the circumstances and locations in which Palestinians have vanished.
The center stressed that the sample does not represent the total number of missing Palestinians in Gaza, but provides an indication of the broader patterns surrounding their disappearance.
Of the 317 cases examined, 302 involved males, accounting for more than 95 percent of the sample. The documented cases also included 41 children and 17 elderly Palestinians.
Gaza Governorate recorded the largest number, with 89 cases, followed by North Gaza with 74 and Khan Yunis with 59.
The circumstances surrounding the disappearances varied significantly.
Seventy-six Palestinians disappeared during Israeli military raids on homes or while neighborhoods were under siege, according to the study.
Another 60 disappeared while attempting to check on their homes or return to retrieve basic necessities.
The center documented 42 cases involving Palestinians who disappeared while fleeing their homes or passing through Israeli military checkpoints.
Another 39 cases occurred while civilians were attempting to obtain food or waiting for humanitarian aid trucks.
Hunger, Arrests and Unanswered Questions
The study highlighted the role that Gaza’s severe food insecurity has played in exposing Palestinians to dangerous areas controlled or monitored by Israeli occupation forces.
Hunger had pushed civilians to risk entering military zones in search of food, the center said.
In several cases, Israeli reconnaissance aircraft were reported monitoring the movements of Palestinians shortly before contact with them was lost.
Family members and eyewitnesses also reported seeing Palestinians being detained by Israeli occupation forces before all information about their whereabouts ceased, according to the study.
The center warned that restrictions imposed on the International Committee of the Red Cross, including preventing access to Palestinian detainees, have made determining the fate of the missing significantly more difficult.
Families are consequently left without information about whether their relatives have been killed, detained or transferred to undisclosed locations.
The center called for the creation of an independent international mechanism to investigate enforced disappearances in Gaza, establish the fate and whereabouts of missing Palestinians and hold those responsible accountable.
Thousands More Remain beneath Rubble
Separate from those classified as forcibly disappeared, the center estimates that approximately 4,000 to 5,000 Palestinians remain trapped beneath the rubble of buildings destroyed during Israeli attacks.
Gaza’s Health Ministry has repeatedly said that Palestinians remain beneath destroyed buildings and on roads that ambulance and Civil Defense teams cannot reach.
On Saturday, the ministry said the overall death toll from Israel’s genocidal war had risen to 73,449, after hospitals received nine Palestinians killed over the previous 48 hours, along with another body recovered from the rubble.
Another 18 Palestinians were wounded during the same period.
Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2025, Israeli violations have killed 1,313 Palestinians and wounded 4,361, according to the ministry.
The overall toll since October 2023 has reached 73,449 Palestinians killed and 174,472 wounded.
Israel’s war has also destroyed approximately 90 percent of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure, while the UN has estimated that reconstruction will cost around $70 billion.

Board of Peace using Gaza reconstruction funds to erase evidence of Israel's genocide
Israel has unilaterally cleared hundreds of thousands of tons of rubble containing the bodies of thousands of Palestinians from Gaza, in preparation for a long-term occupation and settlement of the enclave.

US President Donald Trump's Board of Peace is directly funding rubble removal and road-paving operations across Gaza that are erasing evidence of Israel's genocide and paving the way for the annexation and Jewish settlement of the strip.
Palestinian researcher and political writer Muhammad Shehada of the European Council on Foreign Relations reported on 27 August that the Board of Peace is “paying the expenses of the IDF's covert transfer of rubble (mixed with dead bodies) out of Gaza.”
"The money is taken from Gaza's reconstruction funds," Shehada highlighted. To date, only the US, Morocco, and the UAE have provided any actual funding to the Board of Peace.
EU diplomats reportedly informed Shehada that “Israel has been quietly moving hundreds of thousands of tons of rubble mixed with dead bodies out of Gaza to bury evidence of its genocide.”
"When the EU asked Israel why or whether they filter human remains out of the rubble, no answer ever came," Shehada added.
Since the beginning of its genocide in Gaza, Israel has killed at least 73,000 Palestinians, the majority women and children. Thousands more remain buried under the rubble of their destroyed homes.
By removing the rubble before a search for victims can be carried out with heavy equipment, Palestinians will not know whether their relatives are dead or abducted by Israeli forces and held in its network of torture centers.
Shehada indicates that proof of the Board of Peace's involvement in funding rubble removal is found in a tender document released by the board on 20 May 2026, which sought contractors for "leveling & compacting" work in Gaza.
Shehada reports that an Israeli company, Terra Firma, has been clearing rubble in Gaza using heavy machinery designed to crush debris and process it into dust, including to help the Israeli military build roads, specifically near Erez.
As a result, the Board of Peace "is actively paying, compensating, subsidizing, and aiding Israeli companies, contractors, the Israeli army, and the Israeli government for these rubble-removal and road-paving operations," the Gaza Herald writes.
"These operations systematically erase evidence of war crimes and desecrate human remains," the Herald added, as no measures are taken to separate remains of victims from the debris or to preserve potential mass graves covered by the newly constructed roads.
At the same time, critical civilian infrastructure such as water networks, electricity systems, sewage facilities, hospitals, and bakeries remain deliberately unrepaired.
According to Dr. Ramy Abdu, a prominent Palestinian human rights advocate, the Board of Peace "acts as a structural cover for ongoing land seizures and displacement."
The Board of Peace was established in the wake of the October 2025 “ceasefire” backed by the US. Trump declared that the board would oversee Gaza’s reconstruction, allegedly for the benefit of Palestinians.
However, over the past 10 months, "Israeli forces have stepped up a systematic campaign of erasure in the area of Gaza directly under their control," according to an investigation by the New Humanitarian.
"In this almost entirely depopulated zone, Israel has been tearing down whatever remains, setting fire to fields, and bulldozing towns and once-green agricultural communities into the ground," the New Humanitarian found.
The Israeli military's activity indicates it is creating "a blank slate" in Gaza and establishing infrastructure needed for the long-term occupation and ultimate annexation of the strip.
Israeli leaders have repeatedly made clear their intention to ethnically cleanse Gaza of its roughly 2 million Palestinians to pave the way for establishing settlements for Jewish Israelis to live in on the ruins of Palestinian cities and villages.
